Hi there!

Yes, it's been a while. It's been all go-go-go here for the past few months, but we're back.

Just wanted to let you all know where you can now check out CelticMoon Craft's latest offerings on a regular basis at the weekends.

As always, we have county and town/city names on offer,

In addition to this, we will be doing as many of the summer fairs, heritage festivals and agricultural shows as we can fit into our summer schedule. Stay tuned for more information on these in the coming weeks. So far, we've booked festivals in Carrick-on-Shannon and the Siamsa Sraide in Swinford, Co. Mayo,and we're always on the lookout for more fairs and festivals to be a part of, so if you know of any, or you yourself are an organiser of an event that features or includes crafts, please keep us in mind, and email us.

And now, to whet your appetite, we're very proud and delighted to show you a few of our brand new offerings that we've just begun creating and selling.

These beauties are glass pendants - not acrylic, not resin and not plastic, but real glass cabochons and glass tiles. Inside each one is an original and unique design we've created.

Some being Celtic knot work patterns and spirals and triskeles, while many of them are very dreamscape-y and atmospheric, all in a wide range of colours and colour combinations for you to choose from.

The pendants come in a variety of shapes and sizes...from small squares and roundy ones, to rectangular shaped ones to large ovals, large square and round ones, as well as your choice of either metallic (silver plated, copper, bronze or black) chains or waxed linen cord.
We've been very pleased with all the positive feedback we've received on these pendants, and very happy
customers - including repeat customers who are now collecting these - so
we've been busy making more and will continue to...possibly adding
bracelets, earrings, rings and brooches as we go along. Why not stop by
either or both markets at the weekends and pick one up as a treat for yourself,
or as a lovely gift for a special someone?
Wow! Has it really been over a month since the last blog post? Thanks for hanging in there and being patient. All apologies for keeping you waiting.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

A lot has been going on this past month for all Irish crafters, artists and musicians up, down and across the country, what with all the summer festivals, heritage week events and annual county and agricultural fairs. CelticMoon Craft was no exception to this, as we were at two big annual festivals this month, both of which were very enjoyable, meeting lots of great people and making new friends at each event.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

First up was the 34th annual O'Carolan's Harp and Traditional Music Festival, which takes place in the beautiful village of Keadue, in Co. Roscommon. It was a weekend long festival, including music recitals and harp competitions with harpists and harp music enthusiasts from all over the world, and included in a parade through the main street of Keadue village, on Sunday, the 5th of August.

This was our first time there, and I have to say how delighted we were with the whole feel and vibe and friendliness, not to mention the beauty of this little village, that is perhaps best known and most associated with the beautiful music of 18th century harpist, composer and bard Turlough O'Carolan, where the town commemorates and celebrates his life and work each summer.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

After all the excitement of the past few months since starting up CelticMoon Craft - both the business itself and the blog - coming up in the next few months will be all the annual Christmas fairs and winter markets that we do every year, beginning in mid-November and continuing on throughout the Christmas shopping season. The Christmas fairs are always a joy to be a part of, and we look forward to them every year. Once we get booking confirmations on the upcoming crafts fairs and winter markets we'll be at, I will post the details here, so watch this space.

I hope your summer has been a good one, and that the weather has been kind to you, wherever you're reading this from. Ireland's weather this summer has been very changeable , sometimes with all four seasons in one week, but with one major and noticeable difference from all summers I can remember: it's been quite humid, alternating between unseasonably warm and very, very wet - even for Ireland.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
As I'm more of a fan of the autumn myself, I'm very much looking forward to the cooler, crisper, light jacket-wearing weather. How about you?

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Thanks to all of you for being patient, once again, in waiting for me to get this blog post out to you. I promise to not leave it so long till the next one. Sometimes, though, time just seems to fly by - as did this entire summer it seems!

I'm happy to say that it's been an exciting few days around here!

Not only are we getting ready for a few big festivals coming up next month (more about that in a bit), but also to announce that Donegal Celtic Crafts, a crafts shop specialising in traditional and handmade crafts, has just opened in Bundoran in Co. Donegal, and that the owners Arthur and Tracy Forbes are now selling our kitchen plaques, mandalas and town/county name plaques in their beautiful new shop.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
In addition to these, we also do commissioned personalised kitchen and town name plaques, on request, so if there's a special someone you'd like to give a personalised plaque to - perhaps as a housewarming gift, or as a unique Mother's Day or Christmas prezzie, just call into the shop and give Arthur or Tracy your specifics, and you'll have a beautiful, one-of-a-kind kitchen plaque or town name plaque for your home or as a gift.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Here's a photo of the outside of the shop, with four of the plaques displayed just outside the entrance:

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

And here are just two of our plaques
that are on offer in the shop:
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Donegal Celtic Crafts has many different types of beautiful hand-crafted pieces for sale, including carved wooden harps (that you can see displayed in their shop window above), crafted by Arthur himself, as well as pieces carved from peat turf and decorative wall hangings crafted from brass. In addition to being a master craftsman, Arthur is also a portrait artist - as you can also see in their shop front window, above.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
If you're visiting Ireland on holiday and are in the beautiful county of Donegal and the seaside family resort area of Bundoran, do stop in to Arthur and Tracy's lovely new shop, and have a look at all the hand-crafted pieces they have on offer, or check them out on Facebook. They'd make perfect gifts or souvenirs from your visit to the seaside resort. The shop is located right on the main shopping street in Bundoran's town centre.

Even more exciting news!

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
In other news, as summer in Ireland is well known for being a time of county fairs and fetes, town parades, agricultural shows and music and family festivals, we're excited to announce that we've just confirmed a stall for three festivals coming up next month.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
The first one we'll be at is the 34th annual O'Carolan's Harp and Traditional Music Festival, in the pretty village of Keadue, in Co. Roscommon, taking place on the 3rd and 4th, with craft stalls being set up on Sunday, the 4th, culminating with a parade through the town.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
A few days later, on Wednesday and Thursday, August 7th and 8th, we'll be at the annual Siamsa Sraide Festival, in Swinford, Co. Mayo, as part of their 26th annual festival, which officially begins on Sunday, August 3rd and continues on until the 8th. This promises to be a fun-filled festival for all the family, including traditional Irish music.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Towards the end of the month, we'll also be at the annual Cong Festival/John Wayne Film Festival, in Cong, Co. Mayo, that will be a three-day event, beginning on the 24th to the 26th of August. If you're a fan of John Wayne's films, this is a don't-miss event, as there will be not only a special screening of John Ford's classic 'The Quiet Man' - the town of Cong was where much of the film was shot - but there will also be re-enactments of memorable scenes from the classic and much-loved film.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
So whether you're a local resident in Mayo, Roscommon or Donegal and looking for some great family fun, or visiting Ireland on your summer holiday, there's lots going on all summer long. We're really looking forward to being a part of these great traditional summer festivals, and we're hoping to meet and chat with you, so come and say hello.

And one last bit of exciting news is to announce that our new Etsy shop is just about ready to open its doors. At the moment, we're selecting photos of what will be in stock, including Celtic crosses, key chain holder wall hangings, mandalas, personalised kitchen plaques. We'll be adding a link to our Etsy shop once we've stocked it, so watch this space (and our shop).
Although it was unfortunate that the Strandhill Show in Lisheen had to be cancelled last Saturday due to heavy rainfall the day and night before, we took advantage of that time by soaking up the creative energy that is all around the Strandhill and Knocknarea area, went down to the beach at Strandhill, had some gorgeous tea and freshly-baked cherry scones at the friendly and mellow Shells seaside cafe, and came up with some new ideas and plans for upcoming plaque and mandala designs.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
When we came back home, we immediately got into working on the first of the Celtic crosses, as well as finishing up these newest mandalas:

<div align="justify" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
It's been a while since the last post, but we've a good reason: we've been super busy not only with the new Celtic crosses and new mandalas, but also getting ready for the upcoming crafts fair taking place this Saturday in Lisheen, which is in beautiful Strandhill, in the north Sligo area.

<div align="justify" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div align="justify" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
A little bit about this crafts fair, and that's to start off by saying that it's well steeped in tradition. Now
in its fifteenth year, this fair is one of the longest established in Ireland's northwest. The fair has
evolved continually over the years, whilst always retaining the
traditional craft elements for which it receives huge support from
locals and visitors to the area.

<div align="justify" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div align="justify" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
This year promises all the usual interesting and eclectic mix of both traditional crafts as well as new craftspeople... CelticMoonCraft being one of the newbies, for which we are very excited and delighted to be a part of. Along with our Celtic mandalas, kitchen plaques and county/town name plaques, there'll be a huge selection of limited edition, ready-to-frame prints.

<div align="justify" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div align="justify" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Among the craftspeople and artists, there'll be a local potter, a fabric printing workshop, traditional handmade butter churning, wood turning, basketmaking, some visiting crafters from the Beltra farmers' market, delicious handmade home-baked goodies from our blogger friend and baker extraordinaire Bridget from Carrick-on-Shannon, as well as herbal teas and jams from the Irish Tea Company.

<div align="justify" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div align="justify" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
For more information, or for directions on how to get to the Lisheen Craft Fair, here's the link.

<div align="justify" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div align="justify" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Another announcement today is that Viva Health Foods, a local health food shop in south Sligo (Tubbercurry) now has several of our personalised hand-painted kitchen plaques, mandalas and county/town name plaques for sale. Two of the Tubbercurry name plaques and one of the mandalas are now part of their current window display. If you're in the Tubbercurry area, or passing through, have a look inside the shop - not only for the plaques and mandalas, but for the brilliant range of health foods they have on offer and the lovely people who work there.

<div align="justify" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
If
you're in the Sligo/Leitrim/Donegal area, or more specifically in and
around the Strandhill and Knocknarea area this weekend, the Lisheen
crafts fair promises to be a brilliant and enjoyable day out for the
entire family - with lots to do and refreshments/munchies, too. And even
the weather forecast is looking quite pleasant.

We hope to see you there!

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Although no one today
knows for sure what the true meaning of the Celtic spirals and
knot work are, or indeed represent – what is certain is that these designs
appear to be as old and mysterious as time itself.

<div class="western" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;">

<div class="western" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Showing up first on
cave and rock art all over the world, they made their appearance in
the 'Celtic' lands of Ireland, Scotland, England, Brittany and Wales about
5,000 years ago as stone carvings and on other monuments.

<div class="western" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;">

<div class="western" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
From ancient times
right up to the present day, these spiral and interlacing knot work
motifs, along with animal zoomorphics, have been a constant within
Irish art. craft and cultural traditions. The Irish version, which
also appeared in Scotland and the north of England around the fifth
century within the pages of illustrated manuscripts such as The
Book of Kells and The Book of Durrow, brought these
ornate and intricate designs to remarkable levels of detail and
beauty.

<div class="western" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;">

<div class="western" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
There is much
speculation on the meaning of these designs and patterns. Some say they represent
a transcendental spiritual path between the material and non-material
world; that the interweaving patterns may be a symbolic representation of
inhalation and exhalation of the life force in each of us, and the
ceaseless flow of energy and movement, both on a personal level and
in terms of the universe itself. Others put forward the idea of both
the spirals and the interlacing knot motifs as being representations
of running water and carry the idea of fertility and the continuity
of life, while still others speculate that the spirals speak of the
transmigration of souls to alternative realities.

A twelfth century scholar by the name of Giraldus
Cambrensis wrote this after examining an illuminated Irish gospel manuscript, which
may quite possibly have been referring to The Book of Kells:

"Examine it carefully, and you will
penetrate to the very shrine of art. You will make out intricacies so
delicate and subtle, so concise and compact, so full of knots and links,
in colours so fresh and vivid, that you might think all of this was the
work of an angel, not of a man."

<div class="western" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;">

<div class="western" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
One thing for certain,
though, is that these designs resonate deeply with people from all
cultures and traditions – as if we are witnessing some primal
compass point leading us back to the higher aspects of one's
consciousness.

<div class="western" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;">

<div class="western" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
As Carl Jung wrote, "Because there are innumerable things beyond the range of human
understanding, we constantly use symbolic terms to represent concepts
that we cannot define or fully comprehend."

<div class="western" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;">

<div class="western" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
These designs and
motifs – from spirals to knots to animal zoomorphics, as well as the
colours and colour combinations used – all work together to create a
sense of a personal meditative journey being taken by both the artist
and the viewer.

<div class="western" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;">

<div class="western" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Here are some new
mandalas we've been working on, with more new ones being created and offer as these go off to new homes.

and colours resonate most with you?

<h4 class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-weight: normal; text-align: left;">
These are just a few of the Celtic crosses we have sold over the years, in all shapes, sizes and colours - some as stand-alones with bases on the bottom and some being very colourful wall hangings. If I had to guess, I'd say that we've made nearly a hundred or so of these crosses.

<h4 class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-weight: normal; text-align: left;">
Some of them were just painted with no additional embellishments, while on others, like many of the ones in the first photo, I added and glued some crushed, dried leaves and knobbly tree bark from the old trees in our back garden that I felt would give them a more ancient look and more tactile, too. I remember someone who bought one of the tree bark textured ones and said, with a smile, 'Very hobbit-y.' I remember smiling when she said that, too.

<h4 class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-weight: normal; text-align: left;">

<h4 class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-weight: normal; text-align: left;">
The only one we still have is that huge one in the center in the photo above which I've lately been considering giving to a local church.

<h4 class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-weight: normal; text-align: left;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">As we've had a lot of requests recently from people who've previously bought these at crafts fairs from me over the years, I'm now thinking about doing more of them once again. They're a bit trickier than the plaques, though, as it means getting the jigsaw out and cutting them to the correct shape and proportions. Having said that, however, they're all a joy to create.

In addition to meeting a lot of lovely crafters and shoppers at the fair, a special thanks goes out to Trish and Tom Ryan from Downland Crafts, based in Killeshandra, Co. Cavan, who did a truly wonderful job organising and setting up the fair. The day was a great success and quite enjoyable, and we're hoping that there will be more craft fairs in Sligo and the northwest on a regular basis, not just during the winter months.

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-weight: normal;">This is but a small selection of the Celtic mandalas we have. Painted on blocks of wood approximately six inches tall by six inches wide, these vibrantly coloured wall hangings are individually hand painted and then further decorated with beads and other tactile embellishments. These designs and motifs, such as the traditional Celtic knotwork and spirals, are based on and adapted from the beautiful and inspiring Celtic illuminated manuscripts such as the Book of Kells and the Book of Durrow, evoking a calming yet uplifting meditative quality.
